Enhancing Health, Advancing Health Technology, and Reducing Health Disparities, Arizona State University
The Department of Psychology at Arizona State University invites applications for one postdoctoral scholar position in “Enhancing Health, Advancing Health Technology, and Reducing Health Disparities.” This position complements the development of ASU Health initiatives, which includes understanding and addressing human behavior to promote well-being and optimal health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations.
This position is located at the Arizona State University at the Tempe campus. All postdoctoral fellowship positions are for one year. Options for an additional one or two years of funding or a transition to a tenure-track position may be offered, depending on the fellow’s progress and training needs. Tenure-track appointments will require a process of review within the designated tenure home unit.
The postdoctoral scholar selected will join a cohort of other postdoctoral scholars at ASU as part of the Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. The program aims to support the career development of outstanding Ph.D. recipients with great potential for advancing the ASU Charter into a future tenure-track appointment at ASU.
The program seeks applicants whose professional preparedness, experience, and accomplishments are informed by experiences working with and within groups historically underrepresented in higher education in the United States. In cases where pools of qualified applicants are strong, priority will be given to applicants who demonstrate, through prior actions and achievements, intentional and actionable commitment to the values expressed in the ASU Charter. Such contributions include research or creative activities focused on empowering underserved populations, as well as teaching, mentorship, and service efforts that promote equitable access and inclusion in fields where historically excluded populations are underrepresented.
The Department of Psychology is part of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and is home to 55+ tenure track faculty members specializing in six doctoral areas: Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Cognitive Science, Developmental Psychology, Quantitative Psychology, and Social Psychology, as well as robust graduate (terminal master’s degrees) and undergraduate BA/BS psychology and neuroscience degrees. Our faculty have a long history of successful collaborations, innovative science, and national recognition for excellence in researching, teaching, and mentoring. We are committed to fostering inclusive pathways for the care and success of our scholars, leveraging our strengths in health and health behavior change research. Our culturally informed scholars apply community-embedded theory and methods to address health disparities and improve the well-being of underserved populations.
The scholar will be partnered with our current faculty, who have expertise in various health-related topics, including chronic pain, aging, genetics, neurobiology, women’s health and interventions, health behavior change, judgment and decision making, as well as respiratory viruses and vaccine effectiveness, obesity, body image, sexual risk behaviors, addiction science, and machine-learning approaches to treatment.
The Department of Psychology is committed to providing individualized mentorship and career development to ensure the selected scholar is well prepared to succeed in a potential future tenure-track appointment. Faculty will assist the scholar in identifying activities to enhance a scaffolded transition to a tenure-track position. These activities include focused development of: 1) teaching, such as course development and professional development activities (observations, workshops), 2) research, including lab development plans (structure, grant-submissions, website/tool development), and 3) professional networking, involving identification/connection via mentors in national and international networks of scholars within the chosen research/training area. Career development and community building will also occur through programmatic support at the ASU Graduate College’s Postdoctoral Affairs Office.
