Job Description

This is a temporary position to work with the Director to conduct social and behavioral scientific investigations, including analyses of large-scale and longitudinal datasets. A particular focus of these investigations is to understand and address educational and health disparities occurring during early and middle childhood. The position will be affiliated with the University at Albany’s Institute for Social and Health Equity (ISHE), a university-wide hub for interdisciplinary research.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with the Director to conduct scientific investigations using large-scale datasets and advanced quantitative methods (e.g., latent class analysis, structural equation modeling, growth modeling, and student fixed effects).
  • Lead and assist in writing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, as well as book chapters, reports, and op-eds.
  • Coordinate data analysis activities with multiple stakeholders, including state and federal policymakers and educational personnel.
  • Develop research projects that may result in first-author publications, as well as contribute as a co-author to journal papers and reports.
  • Assist with Institutional Review Board (IRB) and human subjects protocols.
  • If interested, provide methodological training within the lab and to UAlbany faculty on advanced quantitative methods in psychology, epidemiology, and economics, including methods supporting causal inference and the empirical examination of intersectionality.
  • Lead and assist in the development and revision of external grant proposals, including submissions to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Institute of Education Sciences (IES), and private foundations.
  • Present analyses and represent the lab at scientific meetings and national conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

  • This position reports directly to the Director and will interact regularly with ISHE faculty and staff.
  • Supervisory responsibilities may include mentoring and overseeing postdoctoral scholars.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to clean, securely manage, and analyze large and complex datasets while maintaining proper documentation for archiving and reproducibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively under the Director’s supervision while leading interdisciplinary projects.
  • Ability to work independently to conduct rigorous analyses and produce high-quality papers, reports, and op-eds.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely, independent, and high-quality manner.
  • High level of professionalism and initiative.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within a diverse campus community.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in public health, public policy, psychology, human development, education, quantitative methods, sociology, economics, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and advanced interpersonal skills in interdisciplinary team settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise in advanced quantitative methods for analyzing large-scale and longitudinal datasets.
  • Experience conducting analyses for peer-reviewed journal articles as a first author.
  • Proficiency in statistical software such as Stata, Mplus, R, and/or SPSS.
  • Experience submitting grant proposals to federal agencies and/or private foundations.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications involving large-scale datasets and quantitative methods.
  • Experience working within interdisciplinary research teams and coordinating multiple large projects.
  • Ability to incorporate feedback and revise analyses as needed.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Working Environment

ISHE’s offices are located on the ground floor of the Biology Building on UAlbany’s Uptown Campus. A hybrid remote work schedule is available, subject to university policy. Fully remote arrangements may be possible for exceptional candidates with a demonstrated history of successful independent work. Please note that the position does not provide visa sponsorship.
