Developmental Science

As we approach 2025, the designated year for a comprehensive review of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specific research questions about human development will be placed in focus. This Special Issue invites submissions in target areas relevant to the UN SDGs and those that look beyond the 2030 agenda, aligning developmental research with broader global priorities for human development and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in developmental research. Developmental Science is inviting papers that focus on the following areas:

  • Global Challenges That Hinder Child Development: We invite research that explores the disproportionate impact of climate change, forced displacement and human migration, and/or socioeconomic hardship on child development and that identifies the mechanisms through which these global challenges affect child development.
  • Determinants of Early Thriving and Persistent Learning Barriers: We invite research that investigates the factors and mechanisms that contribute to early thriving (e.g., motor, language, sensory, neural) and that examines persistent obstacles to building foundational skills. We also invite research on effective strategies to overcome these barriers and to facilitate development and learning.
  • Core Competencies Living in an Evolving World: We invite research that investigates the development of intercultural awareness, global citizenship, and shared responsibility; the effective use of digital technology to support basic learning and development; and other essential skills for lifelong learning and adaptability in a dynamic world.
