We are now accepting applications for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Matilda White Riley (MWR) Early Stage Investigator (ESI) Paper Competition! This prestigious opportunity recognizes exceptional early stage investigators whose work exemplifies Dr. Matilda White Riley’s vision of advancing health-related behavioral and social sciences research.
Why Apply?
Up to 12 ESI honorees will be invited to present their research and participate in the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research MWR ESI Research Workshop, a 2-day, in-person event held on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland. This workshop includes—
- Presentations from prior MWR honorees who have successfully transitioned to funded NIH investigators.
- Insights from NIH program and review officers on writing grant proposals and navigating the NIH review process.
- Valuable networking opportunities with NIH program officers and fellow honorees.
The workshop will culminate with a presentation by the MWR Distinguished Lecturer.

- Workshop Dates (In-Person): June 9–10, 2025
Eligibility Requirements:
To qualify, applicants must submit one eligible article focused on the study of behavioral and social phenomena relevant to health. They also must—
- Meet NIH’s definition of an early stage investigator as of February 14, 2025.
- Be the sole or primary author of a peer-reviewed original research article published or accepted between January 1 and December 31, 2024.
