Infant and ChIld Development

We are pleased to announce a special issue of Infant and Child Development on “Capturing the Diversity in Early Multilingualism”: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/15227219/call-for-papers/si-2025-001220.

 

This special issue aims to collect studies measuring the diversity of multilingual children’s (communicative) environments and its associations with various aspects of their development. We invite articles that use innovative measures to indicate the diversity associated with multilingual environment and/or address the relationship between various aspects of this diversity and aspects of children’s development, including (but not limited to):

* Language and vocabulary acquisition

* Cognition

* Social cognition

* Pragmatic skills

* Communicative behaviour

* Learning and exploration

Interested contributors should submit the letter of intent within the submission period: October 1st, 2025 – February 1st, 2026 to the lead guest editor via email: Joanna Rutkowska (joanna.rutkowska@jacobscenter.uzh.ch). Please set the subject line as “Multilingualism Special Issue”. The letter should include the following: (1) tentative title, (2) names and affiliations of anticipated authors, (3) description of the proposed manuscript, including the addressed research question(s), theoretical foundation and (expected) findings (up to 500 words), and (4) the relevance of the proposed manuscript to the special issue (up to 100 words).

 

The guest editors will respond to the letters of intent within 1 month after submission, allowing for a quick potential submission of the full manuscript. Contributors will be invited to submit full manuscript for peer review via Infant and Child Development online submission system by November 1st, 2026. The submissions from ongoing studies are encouraged, if the manuscript is expected to be finalised by the submission deadline. We especially welcome pre-registered studies.
